1989: Dawn of Freedom Corrections and Clarifications (as of 12/7/14)
CORRECTIONS:
6.3.5, Goddess of Democracy/Structure Removed: should read "the
first player to reach this box can discard a non-Scoring card and draw a
replacement after Strategy cards are dealt at the
start of every turn until his opponent reaches this box."
8.4.6: 2nd sentence should read: "The Communist scores a
number of Victory Points equal to the country's Power Value multiplied by the
number of times the Scoring card has been played."
Map: The Power Struggle Results Table on the map should
read "If the Democrat wins and rolls a 4 or higher for Victory Points, the
Communist is toppled and the Scoring card is removed from the
game."
Map: The 5th space of the Tiananmen Square track should read "Discard
non-Scoring card and draw replacement card at start of
Turn"
Card 15 (Honecker): 1st sentence should read "The
Communist Player may take any non-Scoring card in the
discard pile and put it in his hand."
Card Manifest: 1st sentence for Card 15 (Honecker) should read "The
Communist Player may take any non-Scoring card in the
discard pile and put it in his hand."
Card Manifest: Card 24 (St. Nicolas's Church)
and card 73 (Lazlo Tokes) should both be in red to denote that they are
affected by the Goodbye Lenin! event.
CARD CLARIFICATIONS:
5. General
Strike: The Communist can either discard a non-Scoring card or
play a Scoring card. No die roll is made if a Scoring Card is played.
The card discarded must be announced before the die roll is made.
8. Prudence: If
this card is reclaimed from the discard pile by a player who already played the
event in the current turn, he may play it again to double the strength of the
event (the Ops value of the opponent's cards would then be reduced by 2, to a
minimum of 1).
13. Stasi: The
card selected to be played next is still considered to be in the Democrat's
hand. If the card is no longer in the hand when it is the Democrat's
Action Round (for example if Brought Into Questioning causes it to be
discarded), the Democrat gets to play a card of his choice. When Stasi
in effect, if the Democrat wishes to play card 21 (Common European Home)
to cancel a Communist event, he must designate the card with the Communist event
as the card he will play next, and then on his turn announce the usage of
Common European Home to cancel the Communist event. If instead the
Democrat declares Common European Home to be the card he will play
next, he must play it for Operations points.
17. Roundtable Talks: The 2 cards drawn from the Communist's hand hand
are placed in the Democrat's hand.
20. Deutsche Marks: If the Democrat has no non-Scoring cards,
there is no effect, and the event is removed from play.
21. Common European Home: Not an event in itself. It is a
complimentary card that can be played immediately if a Strategy Card with an
enemy event is played. See the rulings for card 13 (Stasi) and
card 71 (Kiss of Death).
30. Tear Gas: Not removed from play until after a Support
Check in a Student space.
44. Inflationary Currency! The decision to
discard to cancel the Support Check is made after the 2 support are removed but
before the phasing player announces in which space he will make the Support
Check. The card discarded may have an Ops value greater than 3.
46. Goodbye Lenin! If played as an Event, the card is
removed from play even if the result is that the Democrat uses the card for
Operations.
51. 40th Anniversary Celebration! The Communist receives
the VP regardless of whether he is ahead in VPs or not.
62. Yakovlev Counsels Gorbachev: Removed after the next
Power Struggle whether the Democrat wins or not.
69. Systematization: Bucuresti is allowed to be eliminated, but
all Communist SPs in the space are lost.
70. Securitate: From the moment both players examine their
hands, the Democrat must play the entire Power
Struggle with his hand revealed.
71. Kiss of Death: If the random discard is a neutral event, it
is played as if the Democrat had played it. If the discard is
card 21
(Common European Home), there is no effect; the card is not an event by
itself.
72. Peasant Parties Revolt: The Farmer space must be in the
country of the Power Struggle. Removed after the next Power
Struggle whether the Democrat controls a Farmer space or not.
73. Laszlo Tokes: If the Democrat chooses to place SPs, they
must go in Romania.
76. Warsaw Pact Summit: The +2 modifier if Support Checks are
made is in addition to the card's Operations value.
77. Samizdat: The card set aside may be a Scoring card.
The Scoring card does not count as a held card, and will not lose the game for
the Democrat. May be played on Turn 10.
83. Modrow: Only prevents Honecker from being played. It
does not cancel the effect of Honecker (i.e., the optional 8th action round at
the end of the turn) if Honecker has already been played.
90. Civic Forum: The Democrat makes two Support Checks.
91. My First Banana: The SPs removed must come from East Germany
107. Massacre in Timisoara: The Communist makes two
Support Checks.
RULES CLARIFICATIONS
4.5.2, first bullet: If a player has more than one card remaining in
his hand, he holds them all.
5.1: A card may never be played as an Event if its prerequisite
has not been made or if it is cancelled by some other Event. Otherwise, it
is legal to play an Event even if it has no effect. An event with an
asterisk(*) that is played in this way is permanently removed from play.
6.3.1: You may make a Tiananmen Square attempt that has no chance
of success.
6.3.5, Goddess of Democracy/Structure Removed: The discard and draw
occurs after Strategy Cards are dealt.
6.3.5, Local PLA support/Rural Divisions Summoned: You get a single
support check, strength Ops 2. The strength can be modified by all events
in effect that affect Ops value, such as Prudence and The Sinatra
Doctrine.
6.4: Support checks are always voluntary: you are never forced to
make one. However, once the die is rolled, you must apply the result.
7.4: Rule 6.1 only applies when the Operations value of the card is
being referenced. If a card card tells you to make a Support Check using
the Operations value of the card, 6.1 applies. If a card tells you to
place 2 SPs somewhere, 6.1 does not apply.
8.1.1: Shuffle all 52 cards of the Power
Struggle deck together at the start of every Power Struggle. This includes
any Power Struggle cards that were held, played, or discarded in the previous
Power Struggle.
8.3.1: Players may examine the Power Struggle discard
pile at any time.
8.4.1: If a leader card is played by the
attacker as a Rally and the card is not blocked, he receives the +2 modifier to
his Power Struggle Table die rolls. Similarly, a leader card played as a Petition receives a -2
modifier.
